The old trojmiasto (Tricity) Gdansk, Sopot and Gdynia
Today, the more than thousand years old former Hanseatic city Gdansk is the economic and cultural center of the north east of Poland. The city has nearly half a million inhabitants and is Poland’s most attractive seaport. It is a large center for economics, science and culture as well as for tourism.
Sopot , a seaside town located between Gdansk and Gdynia, was already known as a health resort in the 19th century. In 1823 Napoleon’s medic Jean Haffner build a bath complex in this town. Today Sopot is a popular resort town. Special attractions are the forest opera and the mole with its 500 metres of length.
Gdynia is a modern commercial and fishing harbour.
Gdansk, Sopot and Gdynia form together the trójmiasto (Tricity) city agglomeration which has over one million inhabitants. The small alleys with their numerous boutiques, jewelry shops, galleries and cafes invite to take a stroll. Much of the jewelry offered is from amber because amber is found on the coasts of the region. Throughout the year there are many concerts and exihibitions. A special attraction located outside the center is the monastery complex of Oliwa with its cathedral from the 13/14th century. The organ in this cathedral is known worldwide for its extraordinary sound.
